Why cursor jumps while typing

I've had my computer for a year now and it never happened at the beginning. For the last 4 to 6 months it is happening. It is happening quite often lately and I have not installed anything that should interfere with the touch pad. Another point I like to make is; if the pad is brushed against, it should move the pointer to a different location, unless clicked, the cursor shouldn't land there. Am I right? The quesiton i have -- why is the mouse or touch pad settings the one to correct the issue with jumping cursor?.
