Suffering from a breakdown after she rejected his marriage proposal, van Gogh dismissed art and literature, and devoted his life to the church. He taught at a school and later moved to an impoverished coal mine in the south of Belgium, where he preached to the sick and poor. Vincent van Gogh eventually found true, requited love in nature, art and his brother, Theo van Gogh — an art dealer in Paris, who supported him all through his pursuit of art. Van Gogh seems to have been particularly enchanted by the night sky, and the gas lighting visible across the water in Arles. The sky is aquamarine, the water is royal blue, the ground is mauve. The town is blue and purple. The gas is yellow and the reflections are russet gold descending down to green-bronze. On the aquamarine field of the sky the Great Bear is a sparkling green and pink, whose discreet paleness contrasts with the brutal gold of the gas.
